Four major battery associations met in Kyoto, Japan on May 21st and 22nd to discuss current global regulatory challenges facing the industry and to lay the groundwork for future cooperation on a number of issues.  Representatives and members from the Korea Battery Industry Association (KBIA), Battery Association of Japan (BAJ), RECHARGE – The European Association for Advanced Rechargeable Batteries, and PRBA-The Rechargeable Battery Association participated in the meeting formally known as the World Rechargeable Battery Regulatory Forum (WRBRF). Vermont Passes Primary Battery Recycling Legislation; Other States to Consider Similar Legislation in 2015

In late May, Vermont became the first US state to enact a primary battery recycling bill requiring the development of a program for collecting and recycling primary batteries.  The statute puts that burden on battery and some battery-powered manufacturers who place batteries on the market in the Green Mountain State. PRBA to Pursue Changes to Secondary Cell Export Controls Under Wassenaar Arrangement

As the energy density of lithium ion cells continues to improve, PRBA – The Rechargeable Battery Association has become increasingly concerned that the export restrictions on “secondary cells” under an international treaty known as the Wassenaar Arrangement could impede technological development. Therefore, PRBA has started to explore the possibility of eliminating these export controls on secondary cells. ICAO DGP to Address International Rules for Lithium Metal Batteries Shipped by Air

At its April meeting in Montreal, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Dangerous Goods Panel (DGP) will consider major changes in the international air transportation regulations on lithium metal batteries. PRBA represents the rechargeable battery industry as an official Observer with the ICAO DGP as well as the United Nations Sub-Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. It’s Time to Align US Lithium Battery Air Transport Rules with International Standards

Global Lithium Battery Industry Faces Multiple Regulatory Tests in 2014

Right from the start, the global lithium battery industry will address a barrage of regulatory issues in 2014.

From February 4th to 6th, a multi-disciplinary working group meeting organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Dangerous Goods Panel (DGP) will meet in Atlantic City, N.J., to consider potential restrictions on the shipping of lithium metal batteries on cargo and passenger aircraft.  The meeting has been dubbed by ICAO as the “First International Lithium Battery Transport Coordination Meeting.” Read more about Global Lithium Battery Industry Faces Multiple Regulatory Tests in 2014
