Finalists Named in Inaugural Best of Show Awards at the International Battery Seminar

March 13, 2023 | Twenty-two new products to be presented at the International Battery Seminar, March 20-23, Orlando, Fla., have been chosen as finalists in the inaugural Best of Show awards program, recognizing the best new products in the battery space.

For a product to be considered for the International Battery Seminar Best of Show award, it must have been newly released—or significantly improved—since March 2022. Exhibiting companies entered their products for consideration in advance of the event. The product descriptions below were submitted by the entering companies.

Winners will be chosen by the International Battery Seminar community in live voting during the event. Voting codes will be available at finalists’ booths and throughout the event. Voting will open when the exhibit hall opens on Tuesday, March 21, at 9:45am and will close at noon on Wednesday, March 22. Winners will be announced live at the event on the exhibit hall floor on Wednesday, March 22, at the 4pm Refreshment Break. Please note, selection is not based upon level of sponsorship.

Best of Show Poster Awards

In addition to recognizing Best of Show New Products, the event will also be honoring a Best of Show Poster winner. More than 60 research posters will be presented at the International Battery Seminar, and all of these are candidates in the Best of Show poster award. Again, winners will be chosen by the community in live voting during the event. Voting codes will be available at each poster. Winners will be announced at the beginning of the plenary session on Wednesday, March 22 at 2:50pm.

The Swappable Industrial Battery (SWIB) system allows hot swapping of multiple battery packs for continuous power. The SWIB has a suite of accessories that enable Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and system integrators to electrify their mobile workstations; including the SWIB battery, receiver, power distribution electronics, AC/DC power supply for charging, and DC/AC inverters. Using a combination of these accessories, an OEM or system integrator can employ the SWIB for a mobile power source and stationary charging station. The SWIB batteries can be connected in parallel for charging and discharging. This parallel function enables hot-swapping of multiple batteries when installed with a mobile workstation. HIOKI’s BT5525 Battery Insulation Tester enables cell manufacturers to produce the highest-quality battery cells that are safer and designed to last longer than the current generation of battery cells. The BT5525 is the first battery insulation resistance tester that detects minuscule insulation defects caused by contamination. The detection method is based on the Break Down Detect function. BDD is a proprietary method that detects minuscule internal short circuits caused by metallic contamination before battery cells are filled with electrolytes. By identifying and eliminating defective parts early in the production process, battery cell manufacturers reduce the risk of battery fires or thermal runaway of battery modules. The BDD is a combination of analog circuitry (peak hold) and digital sampling (at 5 MS/s) for detection. It can detect the slightest variations by monitoring minute voltage alterations during charging and small stable voltage and current changes after charging. This eliminates the problem of imperfect detection caused by sampling timing and resolution, which is an issue regarding waveform measurement using traditional oscilloscopes or recorders.

NCORE™ polymer composite thin copper current collectors eliminate about 85% of copper content, reducing weight and thickness, improving energy density and vehicle range, with a fuse-like feature for increased safety. Typical current collectors made of solid copper foil are heavy, accounting for more than 10% of the weight of the battery cell and range from 8-12 microns thick. NCORE™ reduces weight by about 85% for the current collector, and 5% at the cell level, and thickness is just 6.5 µm. Reduced weight and thickness increase energy and power densities and extend vehicle range. A thin plastic material is embedded with metal from both sides, using META’s proprietary PLASMAfusion® vacuum deposition technology. This creates metal layers on the top and bottom, and metal bridges that conduct current through the material from one side to the other. If the local current gets too high, because of a short, the plastic material melts, destroying the bridges and acting like a fuse to shut down the current at that location for increased battery safety. Star Burst can be customized based on client’s requirements and the materials being processed. This includes several chamber options that perform different functions. The new Ultra-fine Slit Chamber has a narrower nozzle, delivering greater shear force than the current slit chamber. The updated design allows for faster and finer grinding, dispersion, and emulsification with minimal contamination. Testing indicates that wet milling with the Ultra-fine Slit Chamber can pulverize or homogenize carbon, ceramics, polymer and other battery materials finer than with current chambers. Current trials have achieved pulverization of some raw materials to 1/5 the size of the current slit chamber. Compared to the Slit Chamber, the new Ultra-fine Slit Chamber achieved emulsification rates 400% faster, 26% smaller particles, and improved liquid transparency. Particles and droplets can be reduced to sizes unachievable with conventional slit chambers, improving final product performance and fueling innovation.
