PNNL Releases Guidance on Local Battery Energy Storage Systems
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are growing in popularity—gaining policy support and decreasing in price—which is driving rapid growth in the installation of these systems in the United States and around the world. To date, 10 states have adopted legislation or executive actions requiring electric utilities to install certain amounts of energy storage, and many states have also established financial incentives and other policies designed to encourage the use of energy storage to make the electric grid more flexible.
DOE Announces $3.5B for Next-Generation Technologies, Battery Chemistries
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced up to $3.5 billion from the Infrastructure Law to boost domestic production of advanced batteries and battery materials nationwide. As part of President Biden's Investing in America agenda, the funding will create new, retrofitted, and expanded domestic facilities for battery-grade processed critical minerals, battery precursor materials, battery components, and cell and pack manufacturing, all of which are critical to supporting clean energy industries of the future, such as renewable energy and electric vehicles.
