High-Intensity X-Rays Reveal Lithium Ion Gradient Formation During Fast Charging
Researchers from Argonne National Laboratory have used high-intensity X-rays to quantify how lithium ions arrange themselves into the graphite anode during a fast charge, revealing discrete "phases" that can be monitored during charging and discharging of Li-ion batteries.

5x Improvement To Li-Ion Batteries With Hybrid Silicon Anode
Researchers suggests that a 5x improvement in Lithium-Ion charge-to-charge times if silicon anodes are fortified with a special type of material called MXene.

Akira Yoshino Presents Vision For Battery, Electric Vehicle Futures
At the 2019 CAR Symposium last week in Bochum, Germany, Akira Yoshino, pioneer of the lithium ion battery and Honorary Fellow of Asahi Kasei, presented his assessment of the current state of lithium ion batteries and his vision for electric vehicle applications in the future.

NDC Technologies Exhibits New Measurement Solution for Lithium Ion Battery Electrode Manufacturers at International Battery Seminar
(Booth 410) NDC Technologies new measurement system solution enables lithium ion battery cell manufacturers to produce the most consistent, highest quality electrode components.
NDC's new Photon Sensor precisely measures the coat weight of coatings applied to anode/cathode copper and aluminum foil substrates, as well as provides fine detail of the coating uniformity.
NDC's new Micro-Caliper Thickness Sensor is optimized for press-line calendering applications and provides sub-micron accuracy, high-resolution thickness measurements for deeper insight into variations in coating and calendering processes.
NDC's new Web Surface Inspection System accurately inspects the coating on the calender/press lines so manufacturers can instantly detect, classify, document and record all optical defects.
The new Beta LaserMike LaserSpeed® Pro precisely monitors and control the speed of the battery coating and press lines with better than +/-0.03% accuracy.

Department of Transportation Releases New Rule On Transport Of Lithium Batteries
On March 6, the Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration released an interim final rule on enhanced safety provisions for transporting lithium batteries. The rule added additional marking and labeling requirements for lithium battery shipments transported by road, rail and air.

Advanced Automotive Battery Conference
Governments across the globe and international automakers alike have recently become more bullish on the future of electrified transportation. Consequently, the technological development needed to support vehicle electrification must keep pace with rising expectations – batteries with enhanced performance, durability, cost, and abuse tolerance are indeed crucial to the viability of each of the hybrid/electric vehicle powertrains. AABC was founded to review the status of automotive battery technology and provide informed glimpses into the future. The AABC 2019 program will uncover the underlying technical and business issues that will impact the pace and path of vehicle electrification worldwide.
