Microgrids to Provide Energy Resiliency Beyond Transmission Lines
Commentary Contributed by Catherine Von Burg, CEO and President, SimpliPhi
Every day, billions of people around the world switch on their lights and charge their electronics without concern that the electricity will be flowing. This convenience has lead us to believe that the centralized utility grids are the most reliable method to deliver power. But, as the 2016 Eaton Blackout Tracker report reveals, 4,000 blackouts caused disruptions for roughly 17 million utility customers across the US alone. Many of these power outages were caused by inclement weather.

Ultra-Fast Charging: Can It Play a Role in the EV Revolution?
Commentary Contributed by Stephen Voller, CEO and Founder, ZapGo Ltd.
Several nations, including England and China, have publicized plans to phase out traditional gas-powered vehicles in favor of electric vehicles (EVs). This has spurred debate over the technical challenges of scaling-up existing EV infrastructure and offering quick recharging for EV owners. New technology already offers ultra-fast charging for small electric vehicles and could sharply reduce EV recharging times in the future.

Understanding the Limits of Battery Packs
Commentary Contributed by Anton Beck - Battery Product Manager, Epec
When designing and manufacturing battery packs, it is important to recognize that there will be limitations when dealing with specific costs and performance. In certain instances you may be in a position where you will have to increase the cost of the battery pack or decrease an aspect of the performance. Here are some limitations and what to expect going forward.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Reducing the Traffic Jam in Batteries
Research at Sandia National Laboratories has identified a major obstacle to advancing solid-state lithium-ion battery performance in small electronics: the flow of lithium ions across battery interfaces. Sandia's three-year Laboratory Directed Research and Development project investigated the nanoscale chemistry of solid-state batteries, focusing on the region where electrodes and electrolytes make contact.

"Holy Grail" for Batteries: Solid-State Magnesium Battery a Big Step Closer
A team of Department of Energy (DOE) scientists at the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR) has discovered the fastest magnesium-ion solid-state conductor, a major step towards making solid-state magnesium-ion batteries that are both energy dense and safe.

Scientists Discover Path to Improving Game-Changing Battery Electrode
If you add more lithium to the positive electrode of a lithium-ion battery, overstuff it, in a sense, it can store much more charge in the same amount of space, theoretically powering an electric car 30 to 50 percent farther between charges. But these lithium-rich cathodes quickly lose voltage, and years of research have not been able to pin down why, until now.

ESS, Inc. Raises $13 Million to Drive Expansion and Deployment of its Energy Storage Systems
ESS, Inc., a manufacturer of safe, low-cost and long-duration flow energy storage systems, has received $13 million in new Series B funding. The round includes new investors led by global chemical industry leader BASF, as well as Cycle Capital Management, Presidio Partners Investment Management and InfraPartners Management. They were joined by ESS's original investors, including Pangaea Ventures.
