Battery Power 2008

Pre-Conference Event

Join Battery Power 2008, Battery Power Magazine and the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity on September 3rd to help build a house. New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) is leading an unprecedented rebuilding effort, as the largest homebuilder in New Orleans. In 2008, NOAHH plans on building hundreds of new homes in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes.

No Experience Necessary! Volunteers with all levels of experience are invited to participate. You will receive a small orientation 15 minutes after you arrive at the work site, which includes a safety meeting. In addition, you will receive on-site training/tutorials on tasks that you are assigned to for the day. It is not necessary to bring any tools, as they will be provided for you.

If you have physical limitations or asthma/allergies, you can participate! There are a number of tasks that do not involve strenuous labor. Please advise the Habitat staff you are working with of your limitations. For more serious limitations there may be opportunities to work at their Restore or office. The worksites in New Orleans are new construction, and therefore pose little risk for mold allergies to get irritated. You should take into account the humidity, heat and abundance of plant life.

The work day will be 7:30 to 3:15.

Battery Power 2008 will arrange transportation from the Astor Crowne Plaza hotel to and from the work site and lunch. Volunteers may be asked to donate $10 to cover expenses.

What Will We Be Doing? Homes are at all stages of the construction process. House are built from the floor up. Tasks on the construction site fluctuate depending on need, weather, etc. You will be assigned to a task that morning.

What Should You Wear? Footwear needs to be sturdy and closed-toe and closed-heel. Boots or sneakers are both considered appropriate footwear, however boots are preferable. Pants are highly recommended. Please prepare for the weather by checking the forecast before your arrive at the work site. If it is sunny, please bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. If it is raining, please bring a jacket, raincoat, and/or rain boots.

There are a limited number of volunteering spots. Volunteers will be accepted on a first come basis to registered participants of Battery Power 2008 (attendees, speakers, exhibitors and their friends/family). Deadline to submit volunteer information is July 31 or until the volunteer spots are filled, which ever comes first. If you are interested, please contact Shannon Given at 720-528-3770 ext 104 or shannong@infowebcom.com.
